What is News Engagement Day?
After first proposing News Engagement Day in her book, Millennials, News, and Social Media: Is News Engagement a Thing of the Past?, because of her concerns about declining news consumption, Paula Poindexter, a journalism professor at the University of Texas at Austin, developed the idea of an annual day devoted to engaging with news and revitalizing the importance of being informed as one of her most important initiatives as the 2013-2014 president of AEJMC. The first News Engagement Day, which was called National News Engagement Day, was announced at a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington DC and kicked off Tuesday, October 7, 2014.
On News Engagement Day, people of all ages across the globe are encouraged to read, watch, listen to, and discuss news as well as share News Engagement Day activities using #newsengagementday. It is also hoped that journalists and journalism educators will use News Engagement Day to help educate everyone about journalism’s purpose and principles in a democratic society.
